A Company Volunteer Day in Unidad Park

Getting Out and Giving Back with CIM Group

Parks and gardens are living spaces—where nature intersects with urban environments—and they can only thrive as much as they're cared for. In February, LANLT partnered with CIM Group for a day of transformational cleaning, organizing, and planting at Unidad Park and Community Garden.

For over 30 years, CIM Group has been an owner, operator, and developer of both real estate and infrastructure across the US and broader North America. Their assets include apartment buildings, offices, hotels, and industrial properties, as well as a wide variety of infrastructure projects: renewable energy, solar energy, wind energy, waste to fuel, among others. Investing time and care into the communities where these assets exist is a pillar of their work, which the company makes possible through annual volunteer initiatives.

"We really think community service is important, both in our mission and in creating teamwork. The company supports individuals taking 16 hours of leave to go do volunteer work throughout the year. So this is one of our opportunities to take our whole team, leave the office, and do something together to help the neighborhood and community. This is one of our most fun days of the year."

“The time that CIM is contributing to the garden is really important. Some of our gardeners work full time jobs. Some of them are elders, so they can't do a lot of the physical labor. The fact that CIM sent over 30 people to come and help, we're able to streamline a garden day.

They helped us start seeds for the new planting season. They're also helping us with our weeding. We're also planting some California native wildflowers so we can attract more pollinator friends, like butterflies and bees.”

“I think the partnership here is really amazing because our missions are so significantly aligned in creating better living environments for residents, with more green space and healthy foods. All of that creates more positive outcomes for the individuals that live here.”

"Bringing people from across geographies—we have people here based not just in Los Angeles but also Phoenix and New York—to help improve this garden, spend time together, bond, get out of our projects, and focus on one key mission for the day, it's a great way to build team morale. As we seek to improve the built environment, we're also seeking to make cities a better, safer, and happier place to live. Community gardens such as this one are integral to the neighborhood.”

“In real estate we spend a lot of time on our computers at our desk, so it's nice to be able to get out, give back to our community, and just be outside. I think growing up in California and living in LA, you realize the importance of green space and how much it really does enhance the community.”

“My tasks thus far are helping rejuvenate the garden. That's included using the rake, getting rid of the dead leaves, and then putting a fresh layer of mulch down. That's really bringing the garden alive. It's adding a new aesthetic layer, a new color, but it's also providing a fresh, healthy base so that no weeds grow. It's cool to see like 40 people working on this garden. It's clear that if you have enough people, you can make a big difference.”
