By Speaker Anthony Rendon, Riverfront Renovation

The Maywood Riverfront Park Renovation project is a partnership between the City of Maywood, Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, Communities for a Better Environment, East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, and hundreds of community residents from Maywood and other Southeast LA communities. The project was identified as a priority by the community and all features included in the design were selected by community members who participated in over 10 community engagement meetings and targeted focus groups with local tribal citizens, historians, and residents. At 5 acres, the park is one of the largest in the highly dense city and surrounding communities.

The scope for Maywood Riverfront Park includes 100 California native trees, 55,000 square feet of California native plants, 65,000 square feet of walking paths and plaza space throughout the site, picnic areas, and outdoor gathering and classroom space. The overall renovation project also includes an expanded ADA-accessible playground, upgraded basketball and handball courts and restrooms. Other improvements include a central grassy lawn that will create a flexible space for play and community events as well as an important interpretive feature, the Sleepy Lagoon Memorial, to tell the important story of the site, uplifting critical stories of race, place, and open space access.
