overview | LA: starved for green | inequitable distribution of green | existing measures are ineffectual | environmental reasons for LANLT | opportunistic strategy

A new model of park provision needs to be developed in dense urban areas, such as in Los Angeles. There is not enough available land to build big enough parks to conform to the City’s standards. An opportunistic approach of “open space is where you find it” is the only strategy which is achievable in dense older neighborhoods. By converting vacant lots, abandoned and nuisance properties, and alleyways into neighborhood parks and community gardens, L.A.’s neighborhoods can be made more livable and programming can be provided to respond to the needs of the community.

The Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust was created to do just that.
